Places with a story
Gulatinget på Flolid

Gulatinget på Flolid is a modern memorial landscape dedicated to the historic regional assembly and its laws. Monumental sculpture, paths and the coastal surroundings connect Gulen with a legal tradition that influenced the development of Norway.
The place1
The memorial park opened in August 2005 as the millennium project for Gulen and the former Sogn og Fjordane county. Its location relates to the saga account of an assembly moved to Guløy. The visible installations are contemporary commemorative works, so visitors should understand the park as an interpretation of the old assembly rather than a surviving Viking-period meeting complex.
History and local connections2
Gulating was a regional assembly where people met to make and apply laws. Its organisation changed over time, including a growing role for representatives. Its laws belonged to the wider development that culminated in Magnus Håkonsson's national law of 1274. Gulating moved from Gulen to Bergen around 1310. These developments connect the local place with legal institutions extending far beyond the municipality.
What to look for1
Bård Breivik's Tingveggen, Tinghella and Eldsirkelen give the park its visual structure, accompanied by individual sculptures representing assembly participants. An amphitheatre faces the main works, and paths lead through the landscape and towards the western promontory. Consider how stone, space and the placement of figures turn legal history into an outdoor experience.
