Places with a story
Haugesenteret

Haugesenteret in Ulvik brings the poetry, reading and everyday world of Olav H. Hauge into a former municipal building by the fjord. The centre also looks beyond one writer, inviting visitors to meet poems and songs across languages and traditions.
The place1
The exhibition combines stories linked with Hauge's poems and other poets from around the world. Film and recorded readings allow the writer's voice to sit alongside written work. Views towards the fjord and mountains connect the indoor interpretation with the landscape of the fruit farmer and poet.
History and local connections1
Hauge's life as a reader is an important part of the centre's account. His extensive diaries record reading and reflections on existence, while poems draw on everyday life and nature. This places literary work within an ongoing habit of observation and thought, rather than presenting poems as detached quotations on a wall.
What to look for1
Visitors can try writing in the poetry workshop and explore the poetry library. Younger children can follow the cat trail through the exhibition, using an animal associated with Hauge to discover the displays. The centre's cultural programme and poetry festival extend its work from preservation into live encounters with contemporary poets and songs.
Planning a visit1
Use Haugesenteret's visitor pages for current opening, tickets and accessibility information. The centre is in Ulvik's old municipal building at Promenaden 7. Check the event programme separately if a reading, family activity or festival is the main reason for travelling, and allow time to listen as well as read.
