Places with a story
Solstråleøya

Solstråleøya near Godøysund is a small wooded island in Tysnes with old paths, planted trees and a history of royal ownership. Its sheltered shore and preserved landscape now form a public recreation area. Visitors reach the island by boat.
The place2
The island covers approximately 19000 square metres and contains around twenty tree species, many planted. Old walking paths and remains of earlier houses give the wooded setting a historical layer. The caretaker's house, boathouse and shore access points also show how the island was used and maintained before becoming a public outdoor area.
History and local connections2
After a period of British ownership, the island was given to the royal family in 1905. Following King Olav's death, the heirs donated it to Tysnes municipality in June 1991. The gift required use as a public recreation area, with particular priority for people with disabilities, making access part of the island's later history.
What to look for21
Explore the old paths and the contrast between planted woodland and sheltered waterfront. Information on the island explains its past. The regional guide describes beaches, fishing areas and a restored boathouse within the coastal trail network, while maintenance involves local supporters as well as the municipality.
Planning a visit12
Plan the crossing with suitable boat or kayaking arrangements and current weather information. BOF's boathouse directory directs enquiries about the island's coastal-trail boathouse to Tysnes kystlag. Confirm any building hire or overnight arrangement separately, and use designated fishing areas so that fish waste does not affect the bathing places.
