Places with a story
Moster Amfi

Moster Amfi in Bømlo turns a former marble quarry into a place for theatre, history and reflection. Its church-history centre and surrounding park connect the local landscape with the introduction of Christianity, changing law and the values of modern Norwegian society.
The place21
The centre stands in a disused marble quarry and brings together an outdoor cultural venue, exhibitions and guided visits to Moster gamle kyrkje. The quarry setting is more than scenery: a geology tunnel explains Bømlo's mineral resources and extraction history, giving visitors another perspective on the stone around them.
History and local connections12
The operator places its historical interpretation around events at Moster, including the Christian law adopted at the assembly in 1024. The exhibition Frå heidendom til kristendom explores the transition from the late Viking-age world. A newer permanent exhibition, opened on 1 June 2024, follows changes in power, law and protection across a thousand years.
What to look for1
Compare the old church, the quarried rock and the exhibitions rather than treating them as unrelated attractions. The park's cultural route leads towards the stone cross on Vetahaugen. Theatre and other events add another way to consider how large historical changes affected individual lives and how those stories are told today.
Planning a visit21
Use Moster Amfi's current programme and contact the centre for guided experiences or group visits. Access to the old church outside the summer season is by request. Check which exhibitions, tunnel visit and event are included in the chosen arrangement; a performance ticket should not be assumed to cover every part of the centre.
