Places with a story
Sirdal fjellmuseum

Sirdal fjellmuseum at Kvæven connects mountain life with the buildings, hunting traditions and natural resources of Sirdal. Its outdoor collection and wild-reindeer exhibition offer complementary ways to understand how people have lived in and used the surrounding uplands.
The place12
The municipality describes an information building with exhibition and tourist information, alongside a farmyard collection of ten buildings. School, household and communal structures present different parts of older rural culture. Regional visitor information identifies buildings and objects extending back to the eighteenth century, giving the collection a wider range than one reconstructed farm household.
History and local connections23
A historic hunting cabin links the museum with Thorvald Meyer Heiberg's use of mountain land for organised hunting. The newer wild-reindeer exhibition places this hunting history beside the animals' biology, habitat and present management challenges. Conservation and human use become related questions within the same mountain landscape.
What to look for13
Explore the differences between the outdoor buildings and the interpretation inside the information centre. The reindeer display was developed through cooperation between the municipality, Agder county and the protected-area management board. It explains reindeer history in Sirdalsheiane and the pressures facing the animals, encouraging a more informed view of the mountains beyond the museum.
Planning a visit12
Contact Sirdal municipality about current exhibition opening hours and access to the outdoor collection. Tourist information in the museum building can help with local maps and activities. Accommodation advertised in some historic buildings requires a separate booking. Confirm availability with the operator rather than assuming a museum visit includes entry to every building.
