Carl Knudsen-gården houses Lillesand's town and maritime museum in a merchant's property. The main house and courtyard buildings connect the history of shipping and trade with the rooms, workshops and domestic spaces that supported a coastal business household.

The main house is a timber building in Empire style, with a half-hipped roof, sash windows and carefully articulated door surrounds. Behind it are buildings associated with storage, household work, animals and commercial activity. Together they preserve more of the property's working life than a view of the formal street facade alone would suggest.
History and local connections2
Johannes Grøgaard built the property in 1827 and ran trade alongside shipbuilding, ship ownership and timber business. Captain Carl Knudsen bought it at auction in 1884. His daughter later gave the municipality first refusal to purchase on condition that the buildings and interior became a museum, which has opened each summer since 1970.
