Places with a story
Vikingutstillinga på Bygland bibliotek

Vikingutstillinga på Bygland bibliotek presents local Viking-age finds inside the library's former bank vault. The compact exhibition connects weapons, jewellery and textile tools with excavated graves in Bygland, giving the valley's archaeology a concrete setting in the municipal centre.
The place1
The exhibition includes original objects from graves at Neset and Frøysnes, with many items loaned by Kulturhistorisk museum in Oslo. Swords, jewellery and spindle whorls show different aspects of life and burial. Seen together, they help visitors move beyond a view of the Viking Age defined only by warfare.
History and local connections1
The display opened in 2024 in the new library at the Sentrumsbygget. Its archaeological focus belongs to the wider history of the late Iron Age. The municipality also describes a loom associated with the period leading into the Viking Age, connecting the more conspicuous grave goods with textile production and everyday skilled work.
What to look for1
Look closely at the material differences between weapons, ornaments and spinning equipment. Their presence in graves raises questions about social roles, possessions and the ways people commemorated the dead. The former vault provides an unusual modern frame for interpreting old objects, while the named local find sites keep the story grounded in Bygland.
Planning a visit1
The municipality's 2026 announcement describes limited summer opening supported by volunteers; that seasonal notice is not a permanent timetable. Contact the library or municipality for current access before travelling. The exhibition is at Sentrum 16, and any associated craft event or special presentation should be checked separately against the current programme.
