Places with a story
Fyresdal bygdemuseum

Fyresdal bygdemuseum brings historic farm buildings into the wooded park of Øyskogen in the centre of Fyresdal. Older burial mounds beneath the trees give the museum setting a history reaching far beyond the relocated houses.
About the place12
The museum contains fourteen historic buildings, with structures and collections extending from medieval times onward. The park combines timber buildings, large old pines, a birch grove and four surviving burial mounds. It is therefore both an open-air collection and an earlier cultural landscape, where domestic history stands beside traces of prehistoric burial traditions.
History and local connections12
Founded in 1909, the museum belongs to an early generation of Norwegian local-history collections. The burial ground is much older, although the municipality notes that the mounds have not been archaeologically excavated. Nearby Folkestadbyen developed as a centre for trade, crafts and paid work during the nineteenth century, adding a different phase of settlement to the museum's rural buildings.
What to look for12
During the public season, visitors can look into many of the houses and compare earlier living arrangements. Children can explore a treasure hunt or try reproductions of historical board games. The burial mounds invite a quieter kind of observation: their form and setting are visible, while details about the individuals buried there remain uncertain.
Plan your visit12
The operator's current page gives seasonal arrangements for looking inside the houses. Guided group visits can be requested through Fyresdal's tourist information or Vest-Telemark Museum, including outside the main season when conditions and capacity permit. Check these arrangements before travelling for an interior visit. The nearby signed walk through Folkestadbyen can add context about the town's trades and transport history.
