Places with a story
Drangedal bygdetun

Drangedal bygdetun gathers historical buildings from across the municipality beside the woodland and Motjern. Its farmyards, smaller homes and working buildings offer a tangible introduction to the district's rural life and local services.
About the place1
The open-air museum contains 19 historic buildings moved from their original sites. Houses, barns, byres, storehouses, a smithy and a mill show how work was distributed between separate structures. Drangedal's connections to the coastal waterways, Telemark and neighbouring southern districts help explain the mixture of local building traditions represented here.
History and local connections123
The museum was established in 1962 with the ambition of presenting the district as it had looked one or two centuries earlier. Myrabygningen, a substantial farmhouse built around 1800, moved here in 1965. Rødbygningen followed in 1971 after a varied history as a home and later the first shop of a local cooperative.
What to look for12
Myrabygningen's upper floor contains a complete schoolroom assembled from schools around Drangedal. The newer museum building presents local professional life through a doctor's and dentist's offices, a bank office and a clergyman's office, alongside forestry material. These displays extend the rural story beyond farming to education, health and community institutions.
Plan your visit4
The operator states that the outdoor area is open throughout the year and that historic buildings have information signs in Norwegian and English. Guided interior visits follow seasonal arrangements, with groups also received by agreement outside the season. Confirm the current programme directly: the opening page retains mixed older year headings, so its historic dates should not be treated as a current timetable.
