Places with a story
Henrik Ibsen Museum, Venstøp

Henrik Ibsen Museum, Venstøp preserves the childhood farm of the playwright near Skien. The site connects his early creative interests with family life in the rural landscape of Gjerpen and a museum history shaped by continuing research.
About the place1
Venstøp comprises a main house and former farm buildings in a cultivated landscape north of the town. It is especially relevant to Ibsen's years as a schoolboy, when drawing, reading and puppet theatre formed part of his interests. The museum interprets the family and their surroundings rather than simply presenting the author as an isolated genius.
History and local connections12
The childhood home became a museum through a substantial private gift and restoration effort in the 1950s, opening in 1958. Later study of the family and the house challenged aspects of that earlier reconstruction. Telemark museum is now restoring the residence and adapting the barn for a renewed interpretation, with reopening planned for Ibsen's bicentenary in 2028.
What to look for12
The historical value lies in the relationship between rooms, farmyard and landscape. The redevelopment seeks to recover a more accurate room arrangement and historical surfaces while presenting Ibsen's biography and literature in new ways. Older descriptions of visitor activities represent earlier museum arrangements and should not be mistaken for what is currently available during building work.
Plan your visit23
Venstøp is closed for the major redevelopment. Telemark museum directs current Ibsen visits to Brekkeparken in Skien, where exhibitions, guided activities and city walks continue. Use the operator's current programme and opening information for these alternatives. Treat the announced reopening year as a project plan and confirm the actual opening before arranging a future interior visit.
