Places with a story
Norsk Skieventyr

Norsk Skieventyr in Morgedal explains why this small village in Kviteseid holds an important place in skiing history. The museum connects local pioneers with Sámi skiing traditions, polar exploration and the development of modern winter sport.
About the place1
The exhibitions follow skiing from practical travel to sporting competition. Ski making, wax and changing equipment are shown alongside people who travelled into polar regions or helped establish new techniques. This broader story avoids treating skiing solely as an Olympic event: it also belongs to everyday mobility, craft and the relationship between people and winter landscapes.
History and local connections12
Sondre Norheim, the Hemmestveit brothers and polar explorer Olav Bjaaland grew up in Morgedal during the nineteenth century. Later, the village supplied flame for the Winter Games in Oslo in 1952, Squaw Valley in 1960 and Lillehammer in 1994. The museum places that ceremonial connection alongside the practical innovations that made the village internationally known.
What to look for2
Films and interactive displays complement the historical collection. A ski simulator introduced in 2025 follows a route associated with the local landscape. Outside, a model of the Morgedal watercourse lets children explore timber floating and hydropower. These activities connect winter sport with other uses of the valley's natural resources rather than presenting an isolated collection of equipment.
Plan your visit12
The operator advertises a public season from May to September and group visits by advance booking outside it, subject to conditions and capacity. Check current dates before travelling. The café, museum shop and water park have their own arrangements. A walk to Øverbø, Sondre Norheim's childhood home, is a separate excursion that can extend a museum visit when paths and weather permit.
