Places with a story
Vemork

Vemork brings together hydropower, industrial labour and the wartime struggle over heavy water in Tinn. The former power station above Rjukan now houses a museum within the Rjukan–Notodden Industrial Heritage World Heritage Site.
About the place23
The monumental power-station building stands on a ledge above a steep valley. Completed in 1911, it was then the world's largest power station. Its electricity supported Norsk Hydro's fertiliser production, connecting local rivers and engineering to international agriculture. The building's scale reflects the ambition of the early Norwegian industrial economy.
History and local connections123
The original station operated until 1971, when a new underground station took over. In February 1943, Norwegian saboteurs attacked the heavy-water production equipment in the hydrogen factory beside it. That factory was later demolished, but the surviving cellar has been uncovered and incorporated into the museum experience. The power-station hall and cellar therefore tell related but distinct histories.
What to look for1
In the machine hall, turbines and generators show the physical dimensions of early hydropower. Exhibitions add workers' lives, the wartime operation and the wider industrial community. The heavy-water cellar presents the location of the sabotage rather than merely a retelling in a remote exhibition room. Together, these spaces explain both everyday production and an exceptional event.
Plan your visit1
Use Norsk Industriarbeidermuseum's booking and access information for the day of your visit. The museum's official site provides seasonal opening schedules and current ticket arrangements. The separate Sabotørstien walking route is a substantial outdoor excursion, beginning at Rjukan Fjellstue and ending at Vemork. Plan that walk independently of museum entry, according to weather, terrain and available guiding.
