Places with a story
Kittelsenhuset

Kittelsenhuset is the small house in central Kragerø where Theodor Kittelsen was born. Its recreated family rooms and art displays connect the illustrator's childhood town with the landscapes and folklore that later shaped his work.
About the place1
The museum stands among narrow lanes and closely packed old buildings. Kittelsen's family lived upstairs while his father kept a shop below. This division between home and business helps place the artist within the working life of the town, rather than treating the house simply as a commemorative address.
History and local connections1
Theodor Kittelsen was born here on 27 April 1857. Telemark museum now operates the house and has recreated parts of the upstairs apartment to suggest the family's surroundings. The interpretation brings childhood and later artistic development together, while the street setting offers another connection to the town Kittelsen remembered.
What to look for12
The Jomfruland series introduces a different part of the Kragerø landscape. Kittelsen visited the island in April 1893 and made atmospheric drawings inspired by scenery, poetry and local stories. The museum shows copies of these works; the originals are preserved by Nasjonalmuseet. Downstairs, the exhibition room and small shop add to the visit without making this a large gallery complex.
Plan your visit3
Kittelsenhuset is a summer museum, and the operator publishes its season and any events. At the research check the advertised summer visiting period had ended. Consult the current Telemark museum page before travelling specifically for an interior visit, and confirm group or special arrangements directly. The narrow house and historic rooms are worth discussing with staff if you have access needs.
