Places with a story
Vinjestova

Vinjestova is the small mountain cabin associated with poet Aasmund Olavsson Vinje at Eidsbugarden in Vang. Beside the western end of Bygdin, it connects Norwegian literature with the beginnings of organised tourism in Jotunheimen.
About the place12
The cabin, also known as Vinjebua or Eidsbu, stands near Fondsbu and the historic hotel site. Its modest size contrasts with the mountain landscape that inspired Vinje. Local hunters, fishers and herders already knew and used these mountains; the cabin belongs to a later chapter in their cultural and tourism history.
History and local connections12
The building was completed in 1868 for Vinje and his companions. Timber travelled across Bygdin by boat. Vinje borrowed from Thomas Heftye and composed the mortgage document in verse. After Vinje's death in 1870, Heftye acquired the ownership interests, and the site developed as a destination for travellers. The original cabin was later moved out of the hotel complex to the lakeshore.
What to look for2
Look at the simple timber building and its setting rather than expecting a large exhibition centre. The nearby landscape helps explain the poet's attachment to the place. A bust unveiled for the cabin's centenary in 1968 faces towards Falketind, the mountain associated with Vinje's imagined afterlife in his well-known recollections.
Plan your visit13
DNT's Fondsbu information describes visits to the cabin and provides current access guidance for Eidsbugarden. Summer road access, boat departures and winter tracked transport have separate schedules. Confirm both transport and interior visiting arrangements before travelling; reaching Fondsbu or seeing the cabin exterior does not guarantee an open museum. Mountain conditions should shape the day's plans.
