Lands Museum gathers the buildings, objects and stories of Nordre Land and Søndre Land above the centre of Dokka. Its open-air grounds make regional history visible through differences between farmsteads, substantial homes and smaller rural buildings.

About the place14

The museum belongs to Randsfjordmuseet and combines historical collections with changing exhibitions and a year-round programme. Its grounds contain 36 buildings from the Land region. Walking between them introduces local building materials and techniques, while a surviving route of the old Bergenske Kongevei places the settlement history within a wider transport network.

History and local connections25

Lands Museum was established in 1927. The Tomle house, bought in 1968 and re-erected here in 1975, came from a farm that had served travellers as a posting station and inn. Its decorated rooms include work associated with Peder Aadnes. The museum preserves not only individual buildings but evidence of trade, forestry income, domestic display and social differences.

What to look for234

Look for contrasts between the grand Tomle building, traditional farm structures and the tenant-farmer setting explained on guided walks. The Nørsteliløkka loft has its own conservation story: once protected on its original site, it moved to the museum after serious decay. Collections and temporary exhibitions extend the experience beyond the outdoor buildings.

Plan your visit4

The museum offers adapted group visits throughout the year and opens selected houses during the summer visitor season. Outside seasonal opening hours, the outdoor gate is open for walks, but interior access must be arranged. Open flames, barbecues and smoking are prohibited in the open-air museum. Contact staff beforehand for an archive appointment.
