Places with a story
Sødorp kirke

Sødorp kirke preserves eighteenth-century timber architecture and Kristen Listad's carved furnishings in Nord-Fron. Its present location, separate bell structure and recent roof conservation reveal how a parish church continues to change while retaining older work.
About the place2
The cruciform church was consecrated in 1752. It originally stood at the place now occupied by Sødorp chapel, before being dismantled and moved across Gudbrandsdalslågen. The present building is therefore historic fabric in a later setting, an important distinction when following the parish's history around Vinstra.
History and local connections12
The relocation took place in 1908–1910, with reconsecration in October 1910. Subsequent conservation addressed structural and interior problems. In the 1990s the bells moved to a separate bell structure to reduce strain on the church, while roof work completed in 2023 renewed its smaller copper-clad tower features.
What to look for12
Inside, Listad's altarpiece, pulpit, chancel arch and carved door figures form a substantial decorative programme from the eighteenth century. A medieval soapstone font brings an older layer into the room. Compare these furnishings with the building's later repairs to understand continuity in use rather than an untouched period interior.
Plan your visit12
Consult Nord-Fron parish's current calendar and church contact for access. Make sure your destination is Sødorp church rather than the chapel at the former church site. An interior visit is needed to appreciate the carved furnishings, while the separate bell structure and renewed roof features can help explain the conservation history outside.
