Gravberget kirke
Gravberget kirke gives a small woodland community in Våler an exceptionally distinctive modern church. Its tall, tree-like silhouette and shingled surfaces connect twentieth-century architecture with the surrounding forest and older Norwegian timber traditions.
About the place1
Architect Magnus Poulsson shaped the building with the upright form of a spruce tree in mind. Walls, roof and tower are covered with profiled wooden shingles, and four external supports carry the tower. Entering from a corner directs the visitor diagonally toward the chancel, creating a long view within a compact plan.
History and local connections1
Borregaard gave the church to the people of Gravberget in 1955. Bishop Kristian Schjelderup consecrated it on 30 October that year. The gift connected a company associated with forestry and industry with the community, while the design gave the village a strong architectural identity.
What to look for1
Inside, long window bands bring daylight from behind the seating. Painted friezes and the figure of Christ were executed by Dag Frogner and Thorstein Rittun. Arnold Haukeland's gilded-bronze sculpture of Mary and the child stands on the altar, creating another focus within the carefully differentiated chancel.

Consult Våler's parish information for acts of worship and visiting arrangements. Summer guiding has varied during conservation work, so old opening notices should not be treated as current promises. An indoor visit is particularly useful for understanding the diagonal plan, daylight and artwork.
