Places with a story
Huset Aukrust

Huset Aukrust brings Kjell Aukrust's art, writing and inventive imagination together in Alvdal. Sverre Fehn's museum building is part of the experience, opening toward the local landscape while sheltering a playful world of drawings, stories and fictional inventions.
About the place2
The museum presents paintings, drawings, books, films and inventions associated with Aukrust. His characters Solan and Ludvig connect the displays with stories familiar to several generations. Interactive activities and film presentation provide ways to encounter the work alongside more conventional gallery viewing.
History and local connections1
The building opened on 23 May 1996 after Fehn won Alvdal municipality's architectural competition. The operator describes his choice of stone, concrete, pine and glass as a response to the journey through Østerdalen. The complex belongs to the municipality, while the operating company works with the foundation that holds Aukrust's art and rights.
What to look for12
Compare the architectural materials with the landscape, then explore the different forms of Aukrust's work inside. Flåklypatoppen and its moon-rocket attraction extend the fictional world outdoors in the appropriate season. These playful inventions should be understood as part of the artist's imagined universe, not accounts of actual space exploration.
Plan your visit3
Consult the official opening page for the museum, cinema and outdoor attraction separately. The rocket area operates in summer and into autumn until snow, while indoor opening follows a published seasonal calendar. Groups and room hire can be arranged year-round. Choose your visit around the specific exhibition or activity you want to experience.
