Places with a story
Nordre Osen gamle kirke

Nordre Osen gamle kirke preserves an unusually complete eighteenth-century worship space in Åmot. Its high timber interior, simple benches and reused church furnishings make the life of a newly settled forest community especially tangible.
About the place12
The church was completed in 1777 under builder Peder Ellingsen Rødstuen. Its cruciform plan has broad, shallow side arms and a tall tower, creating a surprisingly spacious preaching room within a small building. Unpainted log walls and a flat ceiling preserve the restrained character of its construction.
History and local connections2
A royal order in 1754 encouraged cultivation in Osen's former common forest, and the growing settlement needed a church and burial ground closer than Åmot. Residents sought permission in 1766 and received it the following year. The building therefore records the formation of a community as well as a stage in timber church architecture.
What to look for2
Look for worn benches with farm names, galleries with simple seating and the broad floorboards. The altarpiece from 1674 and pulpit were reused from another church through Åmot. These furnishings show how modest resources and gifts helped equip the new worship space, while the seating reveals historical social distinctions.
Plan your visit12
Use Åmot parish's information to arrange or confirm a visit to the old church, around forty kilometres from Rena. An interior visit is necessary to see the preserved seating and furnishings. The building has retained a historical environment without modern electrical installation, so do not assume the amenities of a contemporary visitor centre or regular museum opening.
