Places with a story
Munchsenteret på Klevfos

Munchsenteret på Klevfos explores Edvard Munch's connection with his birthplace in Løten. Set within the industrial museum at Ådalsbruk, it brings childhood places, early drawings and family correspondence into a more local view of the internationally known artist.
About the place1
Klevfos was a natural setting because the area belonged to Engelaug østre, the farm where Munch was born. The centre introduces his childhood and relationships with people in the district. Early drawings from Hedmarken help visitors see a developing artist attentive to familiar people and places.
History and local connections1
Munch was born at Engelaug østre on 12 December 1863. His family moved to Oslo in 1864, but continued connections brought him back to Løten as a child and young man. The centre opened in June 2012 through cooperation between Løten municipality and Anno museum; the municipality owns it and the museum operates it.
What to look for12
Listen to letters written during Munch's visits and examine how friendships and landscapes entered his early work. The local Munch presentation also describes interactive colour activities, a creative workshop and a virtual-reality sunrise experience linked with The Sun. These different formats make the centre suitable for exploring artistic choices rather than only reading a biography.
Plan your visit12
The centre follows Klevfos's visitor arrangements in the ordinary season. Outside fixed winter opening, guided visits and events can be booked by agreement. Contact the museum before travelling with a group or expecting a workshop. Nearby birthplace interpretation offers a useful companion to the centre, while the museum is the location for its indoor experiences.
