Places with a story
Prøysenhuset

Prøysenhuset celebrates Alf Prøysen through stories, music and a contemporary cultural building near his birthplace in Ringsaker. The woodland approach and relationship with the old farm make the setting part of the experience, alongside exhibitions and performances.
About the place1
Snøhetta designed the centre for adults and children, with a theatre at its core, surrounding exhibition rooms and a small library. A café and terrace look toward the old Prøysen farm. The architecture creates a gathering place for storytelling rather than placing the writer's legacy only behind display glass.
History and local connections1
The new centre was commissioned in connection with the centenary of Prøysen's birth. Its design replaced an earlier centre while remaining close to his childhood environment. Treated pine battens over a red façade connect the modern building with the surrounding trees, and solid timber surfaces shape the interior atmosphere.
What to look for3
The current programme combines exhibition visits and an audio guide with family activities, singing and visits to Prøysenstua. Compare the modern centre with the older home to understand two different ways of presenting an author's world. Outdoor play and storytelling events extend the experience for younger visitors.
Plan your visit2
Check Prøysenhuset's programme for ordinary opening and special seasonal events. Café Julie and the shop can be visited without an admission ticket, while exhibitions and programmed activities have their own arrangements. Group visits may require booking, and summer or Christmas programmes can use different tickets. Choose the date around the activities you want to experience.
