Places with a story
Lauvlia

Lauvlia is the former home of artist Theodor Kittelsen beside Soneren in Sigdal. The house, workshop and surrounding landscape offer a close view of how family life and observation of nature shaped the imaginative worlds associated with his art.
About the place12
Kittelsen built the house in 1899 and moved here with his family that autumn. The museum preserves the home as a setting for understanding the artist rather than simply displaying a detached collection of pictures. His own carvings and the studio connect the building's everyday spaces with his work.
History and local connections2
The family lived at Lauvlia for roughly a decade before financial difficulties and illness forced the sale. This period was important for works inspired by landscape, folklore and changing light. The view toward Andersnatten across Soneren was particularly significant, including the mountain motif in the 1903 painting associated with that view.
What to look for12
Look for the artist's carving within the house and compare the workshop setting with the landscape outside. The relationship between an ordinary home and imaginative nature is central to the visit. The museum's presentation of Kittelsen helps distinguish the actual lakeside environment from the creatures and stories he created through drawing and painting.
Plan your visit1
Plan interior visits through Lauvlia's official programme. Its current visitor information states that the season is closed and the next opening is expected in early May 2027; confirm arrangements before travelling. Use the museum's online account of Kittelsen for historical context, and do not assume that every work associated with this period is displayed in the house.
