Vassfaret is a forested valley shared by Flå, Nesbyen and Sør-Aurdal. Lakes, steep hillsides and traces of former farms make it a landscape where eastern Norway's natural history and rural working life remain closely connected.

About the place12

The valley lies between Hallingdal and Valdres and forms part of the Urula river system. Spruce forest, pine-covered sandy ground, wetlands and lakes create varied habitats. Its name refers to the connected watercourse and valley, although it is sometimes used more broadly for the surrounding forest and mountain area.

History and local connections2

Permanent settlement is documented from the mid-eighteenth century until 1921. Former farms, summer pastures, mill remains and timber-floating dams record how people used the valley. In 1985, landscape protection areas and nature reserves were established to conserve both the characteristic environment and its cultural traces.

What to look for1

Follow the relationship between lakes, streams and forest rather than expecting a single monument. NVE describes Høgfossen below the old floating dam and the transition from open valley floor to steep wooded sides. Mikkjel Fønhus used Vassfaret's wildlife and people in his writing, giving the landscape a literary connection.

Plan your visit1

Choose a specific route and entry point before travelling:Vassfaret is an extensive area across municipal boundaries. Check official maps and the regulations of the particular protected area you enter. Forest roads and paths do not imply access to every cabin or former farm, and fishing requires checking local permits.
