Bønsnes kirke is a small medieval stone church in Hole, later given a timber west tower. Its history of gifts and restoration shows how a local community sustained a church outside the usual pattern of parish ownership and income.

About the place1

The parish's historical account describes Bønsnes as a gift church, maintained through donations. It was excluded from the general sale of Norwegian churches in 1723. Unlike many parish churches, it has no surrounding burial ground, reflecting its particular historical role and rights.

History and local connections1

The building fell out of use in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A donation book begun in 1675 supported restoration, with work starting in 1680. The church returned to use in 1728, when renewed furnishings and a midsummer service helped establish its revived place in local religious life.

What to look for1

Notice the compact stone body and the later timber tower rather than assuming the whole silhouette is medieval. The parish account preserves stories and historical records side by side. The church's association with royal tradition is appealing, but such founding legends should remain distinct from documented building history.

Plan your visit1

Check Hole parish for acts of worship and any visiting times inside the church. The church has a limited pattern of use, so a journey made specifically to see furnishings needs a confirmed arrangement. Approach the protected building quietly and respect ongoing ceremonies; its small scale is part of the experience rather than a sign of unrestricted access.
