Places with a story
Henie Onstad Kunstsenter

Henie Onstad Kunstsenter brings art and fjord landscape together at Høvikodden in Bærum. The low museum buildings, changing exhibitions and surrounding sculpture park offer complementary ways to experience a centre associated with modern art and performance.
About the place1
The centre presents Norwegian and international visual art, with a collection that has grown to more than 8,000 works. Its programme also includes music and performance. Rather than a single permanent display, it offers changing perspectives through temporary exhibitions and new presentations of the collection.
History and local connections23
The art centre opened in 1968. Architectural photographs held by the National Museum document the building by Eikvar and Engebretsen and its terraces toward the outdoor stage. That relationship between architecture, landscape and cultural activity remains an important part of understanding the site at Høvikodden.
What to look for1
Combine an indoor exhibition with the sculpture park, where the art centre lists around 30 sculptures across its grounds. The shoreline, woodland and open park change how the works are encountered. Activities for children and young people add another route into art alongside the main exhibition programme.
Plan your visit1
Use the centre's official visit page for current exhibitions, admission and transport directions. It lists public-transport options and distinguishes museum opening from the surrounding outdoor experience. Check the calendar before travelling for a particular work or event, since displays and temporary exhibitions change.
