Places with a story
Borgarsyssel Museum

Borgarsyssel Museum in Sarpsborg brings together medieval remains and buildings from across Østfold. Its open-air setting makes regional history tangible through houses, farm work and the relationship between the old town of Borg and today's city.
About the place1
The museum stands beside the ruins of St Nicholas' church and preserves a collection representing the wider county. Farmhouses, workshops and other buildings show several ways people lived, rather than presenting one family or one period as the whole of Østfold's history.
History and local connections2
Founded in 1921, Borgarsyssel developed its Østfold farmyard over several decades. The farmyard opened in 1946, but additional buildings and changes continued later. The museum's documentation explains that the arrangement reconstructs a regional building pattern using structures moved from different places.
What to look for12
Look for Bærbystua from Rakkestad, the storehouse, grain-drying house and smithy. Their different functions explain food storage, production and household life. Olavs hall adds displays about Sarpsborg's history, while the museum's tower offers a broader view of the city and its historical setting.
Plan your visit1
Check Østfoldmuseene's current opening times for access to the buildings and exhibitions. Contact the museum about accessibility if you want to combine the outdoor farmyard with the tower and indoor displays. Historic buildings have different layouts, so confirming the route in advance helps plan a visit suited to your needs.
