Fredriksten festning rises above Halden, where a fortified hillside explains the town's position on Norway's eastern frontier. Its walls now frame walks, viewpoints and cultural events as well as a story of military defence.

About the place1

The fortress is a complex of defensive walls and historic buildings rather than a single castle. Its elevated setting protected the approach to eastern Norway. Looking across the town from the ramparts helps connect the military site with the settlement it was built to defend.

History and local connections1

Construction began in 1661 after Norway lost Bohuslän and Bohus fortress to Sweden in 1658. In 1718, Swedish king Charles XII was killed during a siege here. Fredriksten later became a powerful symbol during the struggle for independence and the dissolution of the union.

What to look for1

Follow the paths between buildings and defensive positions, comparing the broad walls with the terrain around them. The fortress also hosts concerts and other events, so the same spaces can serve both as historic monuments and contemporary meeting places for Halden residents.

Plan your visit1

Forsvarsbygg states that the grounds are open around the clock and entry to the outdoor area is free. Museums, galleries and events have separate opening and ticket arrangements. Read the official visitor information before entering buildings. Protect the historic masonry, respect ceremonies and remember that lighting fires is prohibited throughout the year.
