Places with a story
Steinkrossen på Krossøy

Steinkrossen på Krossøy rises above Leiasundet in Kvitsøy as both an early Christian monument and a landmark for seafarers. Its simple stone form links religious history with the practical need to recognize a safe coastal harbour.
The place1
The municipality describes the cross as almost four metres high and easily visible from the shipping route. It has served as a harbour cross and navigational marker. Its location makes the connection between faith, travel and maritime orientation particularly clear: a monument could also help sailors recognize where they were.
History and local connections1
The cross's precise date is unknown. Kvitsøy municipality considers it at least about a thousand years old and discusses possible missionary origins. Saga traditions connect Kvitsøy with agreements involving medieval rulers, but the cross's exact role in those meetings is presented as a possibility rather than a proven event.
What to look for1
The contours of St. Clemens church lie around 200 metres away along the walking route. That church is mentioned in a papal letter from 1146, giving the surrounding religious landscape a firmer documentary anchor. Looking at the cross and the separate ruin together helps explain the area's early Christian and maritime associations.
Planning a visit1
Use the municipality's visitor description for the walking approach and local context. The attraction is outdoors, and the nearby ruin has limited visible remains. Avoid climbing the cross or disturbing the ground around either monument; a careful walk preserves the surroundings while allowing time to look towards the sea route.
