Places with a story
Allmannajuvet

Allmannajuvet in Sauda combines a former zinc-mining landscape with contemporary architecture by Peter Zumthor's practice. Paths, simple buildings and guided interpretation bring the gorge's short but intensive industrial history into view.
The place1
The place is an attraction on the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. Statens vegvesen presents it as a former mine complex now used as a museum, with a gallery and mine café. The buildings follow an industrial architectural tradition, responding to the gorge and the story of work rather than imitating a picturesque village.
History and local connections1
The zinc mines operated from 1881 to 1899. Around 12,000 tonnes of zinc ore were extracted during that period. Although the operation was brief, its roads and mine setting now provide a way to understand the effort of moving materials and organizing work in a confined mountainous landscape.
What to look for1
Look at the relationship between the raised timber structures, the rock slopes and the old mine route. Their restrained appearance makes the terrain especially noticeable. A guided mine visit adds a different perspective to the exterior architecture, following the historic approach and entering the underground workings under supervision.
Planning a visit1
The route operator publishes seasonal opening and tour information. Guided visitors are supplied with helmets and lamps, and the operator asks them to wear good shoes. Confirm the current programme before travelling; a stop beside the architecture does not automatically include access inside the mine or an open café.
