Choosing a dentist in Norway starts with the right clinic and a clear agreement. Check whether you should use the public dental service, who treats you and what the service costs. Clarify language and price before substantial work begins.
First find out whether to use a public dental clinic
Contact the public dental service before booking privately if you may be entitled to public care. The fylkeskommune, the county authority responsible for dental services in the county, can explain where to go.
Search for “offentlig tannklinikk”, meaning public dental clinic, and the county name. Use the county authority’s own website. Call the nearest public clinic and ask whether you belong to a group entitled to necessary dental treatment there.
Children, young adults and some other groups have specific arrangements. Rights and payment depend on your situation. A private clinic with an available appointment does not automatically offer the same service. The information was checked as of 13 October 2026 against Helsenorge’s information on who pays your dental bill.
Ask for an explanation before booking. Say if you have documents from a previous clinic or a public service. On SamfunnPrep, you can also read about patient rights and complaints.
How do you find a dentist nearby?
Draw up a shortlist of clinics you can reach and check the service directly. A local search helps you find addresses and contacts, but is not a professional assessment.
Use search terms such as “tannlege”, meaning dentist, your municipality and the language you want. Open the clinic’s own website. Find the practitioner’s name, price list, address and contact details. Check whether the clinic accepts new patients.
Also ask about availability after the first appointment. If you need several appointments, the times and travel must fit your everyday life. Clarify whether you will see the same dentist or different people.
Reviews may say something about booking and communication experiences. They do not prove that a treatment is right for you. Consider them alongside documented skills and clear answers from the clinic.
Check the dentist and the experience you need
Ask for the name and Norwegian approval of the dentist you will meet. For specialist services, also check which specialty the approval covers.
Helsepersonellregisteret (HPR) is the authorities’ register of health professionals with authorisation or a licence. Authorisation means official approval to practise the profession. It also contains dentists’ specialist information, according to Statens helsetilsyn’s description of HPR. Statens helsetilsyn is the health supervision authority.
Ask the clinic for the HPR number. Find the search service through Helsedirektoratet, the authority granting approval to health professionals. The service may require login. Ask for help checking the information if you cannot use the register.
Explain what matters to you. It could be a child needing a check-up, significant anxiety or follow-up of previous work. Ask about relevant experience. A general advertising term such as “specialist clinic” does not explain who provides treatment.
Compare written quotes for the same treatment
Ask for a description of the work and total price before agreeing to substantial treatment. Compare the contents, not simply the lowest amount.
As of 13 October 2026, the dentist must provide a written quotation without being asked when the total price exceeds NOK 5,000. If the quoted total changes, you must be informed before treatment starts. See Forbrukerrådet’s guidance on dental services, from the Norwegian Consumer Council.
You can also request a quote below this threshold. Before an examination, the clinic cannot always know the entire treatment need. First ask for the assessment price, then request a quote based on the findings.
| Part of the quote | Ask the clinic to explain |
|---|---|
| Examination | What is included in the first appointment? |
| Treatment | Which teeth and work does the quote concern? |
| Extras | Are imaging, anaesthesia and materials included? |
| Follow-up | What does the price cover after the work is completed? |
| Your payment | What do you pay yourself after any support? |
Ask whether the treatment may qualify for support from Helfo, the agency administering healthcare reimbursements. Ask the clinic to explain the conditions and how support affects the quote. Do not deduct an amount from the price yourself.
Clarify language and interpreter costs
Confirm that the person treating you can communicate in the language you need. If you need a qualified interpreter, clarify booking and payment before the appointment.
Helsenorge says interpreting is usually free for patients in the health service. When you pay for dental treatment yourself, you must also pay for the interpreter. This exception was checked as of 13 October 2026 in Helsenorge’s information about healthcare interpreting.
Do not assume a multilingual website means all dentists speak those languages. Ask whom you will meet. State the language and your needs as early as possible. Children must not be used as interpreters.
Ask the dentist to explain what the treatment should address, the alternatives and what further follow-up involves. Say if you do not understand. You need a clear picture of the work before agreeing to it.
Book an assessment before agreeing to substantial work
An initial assessment should give you understandable information about your needs and options. You can ask for time to read the quote before deciding.
Bring questions and information about previous dental treatment. Ask the clinic how old images or medical notes can be sent securely. Documents from abroad may be useful, but the dentist assesses what is needed.
If you have severe dental anxiety, ask how the clinic adapts the first meeting. SamfunnPrep has a separate guide to the TOO service for dental anxiety and trauma. It is a limited service with its own conditions, not a general pricing scheme for everyone.
A short enquiry could be: “I would like an examination and a written quote before any treatment. Who will my appointment be with, which language can we use, and what is included in the examination?”
How to change dentist
Contact a new clinic and clarify transfer of relevant records and images. Also check what happens to planned appointments and ongoing treatment.
Ask whether the new dentist can take over follow-up. A previous quote does not automatically apply at a new clinic. Request a new explanation of the work and payment.
Cancel old appointments under the clinic’s terms. If you have a public entitlement, clarify a change with the public dental service. Having your placement confirmed is better than assuming you can use any private clinic.
If the service or treatment differs from the agreement
Raise the problem with the clinic in writing and include the quote and invoice. Forbrukerrådet distinguishes complaints about prices, treatment and other matters.
Ask the clinic to explain every extra charge you do not recognise. For public treatment, the fylkestannlege, the county dental officer, may be a contact. For other complaints, the correct body varies with the problem; use Forbrukerrådet’s updated guidance.
SamfunnPrep’s first-week checklist for Norway helps you organise digital services and practical contacts. Also keep the clinic’s name, agreement and your documents somewhere easy to find.
