If you have lost your job while your permanent residence application is being processed, the outcome is not determined by your income alone. You need to check two things separately: whether you meet the self-support requirement, and whether you still meet the conditions for your temporary residence permit when a decision is made.

Does losing your job affect your permanent residence application?

It depends on the timing and the type of permit you have. Since 1 September 2025, the main rule is that the conditions for permanent residence must be met when the police or the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) decides the case. The self-support requirement has its own timing rule. The rules were checked on 1 October 2026.

What happens to the income requirement when your salary stops?

If you already met the self-support requirement when you submitted your application to the police, UDI says later changes in income do not change this particular requirement. As of 1 October 2026, UDI lists at least 341 373 kroner before tax in a qualifying 12-month period for applicants aged 18 to 67, with certain exceptions.

If you did not meet the requirement when you submitted your application, UDI may consider a later 12-month period up until a decision is made. Losing your salary may then affect whether and when you reach the amount. UDI accepts, among other things, unemployment benefits as income of your own for this purpose, but not all NAV benefits. Read the overview of the self-support requirement and check your actual income, not just the salary in your employment contract.

Example: You submitted your documents on 1 June and at that time had at least 341 373 kroner in qualifying income during the previous 12 months. You lose your job in August. The income requirement may still be met based on the period at submission. But if having a job is a condition of your temporary permit, you still need to clarify that condition before UDI or the police decides the case. The example says nothing about the outcome in your case.

Do you have a skilled worker permit?

In that case, your employment is often central. UDI explains that anyone who loses a job while holding a skilled worker permit must notify the police where they live within seven days. You can normally stay in Norway for up to six months to look for a new job, but only while your permit remains valid. This is a job-seeking period, not an automatic extension of your residence permit.

If you get a new job in the same type of position, UDI says you normally do not need to apply for a new permit, but you must notify the police within seven days of starting the job. For a different type of position, you must apply for a new permit and wait for it before starting. Your salary and working conditions must also meet the rules. Read the guide to changing jobs on a skilled worker permit for that part of the process.

UDI also says that an applicant with a skilled worker permit often must be in full-time employment when the permanent residence application is decided, because this is a condition of the temporary permit. Income that was high enough when you submitted your application does not remove that requirement. If you are temporarily laid off, UDI describes separate rules: people with skilled worker permits who are fully or partially temporarily laid off do not need to notify UDI or the police solely because of the temporary layoff. Do not apply the dismissal rules to a temporary layoff without checking your situation.

Do you have a family immigration permit or another basis for residence?

Read the conditions that apply to your permit. Someone with a family immigration permit does not necessarily lose their basis for residence just because they lose their own job. The family situation and the conditions of the family permit may matter more. Conversely, changes in the relationship with the family sponsor may raise questions about your basis for residence even if you still earn enough. If your family situation has changed, contact UDI about your basis for residence before a decision is made.

If your residence is based on protection, self-employment or another category, different conditions apply. The six-month job-search period and seven-day reporting deadline under the skilled worker rules do not automatically apply to you. Read your decision letter and ask UDI a specific question using the name of your permit. If you are a citizen of the European Union or the European Economic Area (EU/EEA), the rules on permanent right of residence may apply instead of a permanent residence permit. The guide to work and residence distinguishes between these routes.

What should you do in the first week?

First, meet the reporting deadlines and secure your documents:

  1. Find your decision letter and expiry date. Mark any conditions about work, family or another basis.
  2. If you have a skilled worker permit and lost your job: Notify the police within seven days. Save proof that you sent the notice.
  3. Calculate your income when you submitted your application to the police. Did you meet the requirement then? If not, keep track of later qualifying 12-month periods.
  4. Keep your employment documents. Your notice of termination, final working day, latest payslips, new contract and any documentation about unemployment benefits may be relevant.
  5. Clarify your next basis for residence in time. Check whether your temporary permit can be renewed or whether you need a new permit. The renewal guide can help you keep track of deadlines.

If you are unsure what applies before the decision arrives, contact UDI or the police with your specific dates and permit type. SamfunnPrep can help you keep track of residence time and prepare for the social studies test, but the authorities must clarify employment and residence conditions.
