A visitor visa can only be extended in special, unexpected circumstances. Illness or a cancelled flight does not automatically give you more days in Norway. Check the deadline, document the obstacle and contact UDI or the police before your stay expires.

What should you do first when getting home becomes difficult?

Find your last lawful day of stay and check whether you can still leave on time. At the same time, document what is actually preventing the journey.

This is a plan for short visits in 2027 based on rules checked on 20 October 2026. Utlendingsdirektoratet, abbreviated UDI, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, has specific rules on extending visitor visas. Check them again when the situation arises.

This guide is for you if you are already visiting. If your family has not travelled yet, use the visitor visa guide. If you have an ordinary residence permit, investigate renewal of that permit instead.

Start with this overview:

  • Which document or scheme gives you lawful stay?
  • How many stay days do you have left?
  • When does the visa itself expire?
  • What event prevents you from following the plan?
  • Is there an actual alternative route?

Do not wait several days for an airline reply without checking the stay deadline. The airline changes tickets. Immigration authorities assess your stay.

When can a visitor visa be extended?

UDI says an extension can only be granted in exceptional circumstances. The reason must be special and unexpected and must have arisen after you arrived in Norway.

Examples on UDI's page include serious illness, an accident or a natural disaster. Illness of a close family member or a postponed business meeting may also be relevant. The examples do not guarantee approval.

You must still meet the visitor visa conditions. Explain both why the plan had to change and how you will complete the remaining stay and journey home.

Enjoying time with family, finding a cheaper later ticket or wanting to stay through more public holidays are not grounds you should rely on. A visitor visa is not an ordinary route to a long stay or work in Norway.

What does the 90-day limit mean?

Under UDI's guidance, a visitor visa cannot be extended to give more than 90 visiting days within a 180-day period. Extending a shorter visa does not remove that limit.

Receiving 30 days does not therefore mean you are entitled to the next 60. You still need an approved basis for an extension. If you have already used 90 days, ordinary visa extension is not the solution.

Your situationNext point to clarify
Visa for fewer than 90 daysCheck whether an unexpected event can justify an extension within the day limit.
90 visiting days already usedContact the authorities about your situation; do not expect extra days through an ordinary extension.
You are visiting visa-freeUDI says you cannot apply to extend a visa-free Schengen stay.
You hold a residence permitCheck the rules for that specific permit and, where relevant, prevented departure.

If you must stay longer than visitor rules allow, the authorities must assess whether another lawful basis exists. A difficult journey does not automatically give the right to a residence permit.

What applies when a flight is cancelled?

You must try to change the ticket or arrange another genuinely possible journey home. UDI explicitly says cancellation does not automatically remove the obligation to leave.

Keep the cancellation notice, original ticket and correspondence with the airline. If you cannot find an alternative journey, document your attempts too. This could include available departures, required transit visas and written explanations of why a route cannot be used.

Distinguish an inconvenient new journey from departure actually being prevented. Explain the specific problem to the authorities. Do not simply write “the flight was cancelled” if other flights or routes still exist.

UDI warns that overstaying can lead to refusal of entry or removal (bortvisning), or expulsion (utvisning). This is a possible consequence assessed individually. Evidence of your attempts to find a solution may matter.

What documents should you collect in case of illness?

Obtain evidence explaining how the illness affects travel and how long the obstacle is expected to last. A pharmacy receipt does not necessarily explain why you cannot travel.

Ask the treatment provider to describe the relevant circumstances. Contact your travel insurer for help with treatment and practical travel problems too. The insurer's approval is still not a decision on lawful stay.

A practical document folder might contain:

  1. Passport and visa with legible dates.
  2. Record of earlier Schengen visits.
  3. Original itinerary and change notices.
  4. Relevant medical evidence.
  5. Explanation of when the event happened.
  6. Proposed new departure and evidence covering the further stay.

This is a working list. The official checklist and the authorities' instructions determine what you must submit in your case.

How do you take the case forward before the deadline?

Go to UDI's visa extension page and follow the current application guidance. Contact the police about documents and an appointment where necessary.

The police overview of residence, registration and visits refers you to UDI for the application. Clarify any fee, submission method and what applies while waiting too. Do not treat an online application or appointment booking as automatic proof that your stay is extended.

Describe the case briefly and specifically: entry date, last lawful day, event, evidence and planned departure. Keep receipts and replies. If the deadline has already passed, contact the authorities immediately and explain the timeline honestly.

Does an extension give work rights or another entry?

Do not expect rights beyond what is actually granted. A visit does not give a general right to work, and more days are not the same as more entries.

UDI distinguishes extending a stay from needing a new visa after departure. If you leave Schengen with a single-entry visa, you cannot use the remaining days as a guaranteed return ticket.
