Places with a story
NORVEG

NORVEG is a coastal-history museum on Rørvik’s waterfront, housed in a building with sculptural, sail-like architecture. Its exhibitions explore fishing, aquaculture and the long relationship between Norwegian coastal communities and the sea.
The place1
Architect Guðmundur Jónsson designed the building. Its name comes from the Old Norse word norðrvegr, meaning the route north. The museum combines permanent and temporary exhibitions with a gallery and spaces for cultural activities, making the distinctive waterfront building a meeting place as well as an exhibition centre.
History and local connections1
The permanent exhibition follows coastal history from the Stone Age to a technologically advanced society, spanning approximately ten thousand years. Fishing and aquaculture connect older ways of making a living with contemporary industry. The museum includes the land-based part of an aquaculture visitor centre, while sea-based visits use separate arrangements.
What to look for12
Explore the museum's interpretation before walking to the nearby historic wharf buildings. Five buildings form a small waterfront environment; most were moved from other coastal communities, while one stood in Rørvik. Three house the boat collection. Together, the modern museum and older timber warehouses show different ways of working and living beside the sea.
Planning a visit123
The visitor address is Strandgata 7. Museet Midt provides current opening hours, exhibition information and contacts. Check separately for boat trips, aquaculture visits and access to the wharf buildings, since a museum visit does not guarantee every related activity. Allow time to view the architecture from the waterfront as well as exploring the indoor exhibitions.
