Places with a story
Kystens Arv

At Stadsbygd, Kystens Arv connects coastal history with active boatbuilding. Historic wooden boats with overlapping hull planks and the working Båtskott workshop link the local åfjordsbåt tradition with practical skills still passed to new craftspeople.
The place2
The boat collection contains carefully selected examples representing different coastal histories. Eighteen boats have been photographed as interactive three-dimensional models, allowing close study online as well as in the museum. A foldabåt received in 2025 adds a type combining features of northern and Trøndelag boat traditions to the collection.
History and local connections1
Båtskott Trebåtbyggeri builds traditional wooden boats on commission throughout the year. Its main focus is the åfjordsbåt, and apprentices learn through practical work with experienced builders. This makes the museum's conservation role broader than storing old hulls: it preserves the sequence of decisions, tools and hand movements needed to produce another boat.
What to look for134
Visit the boat displays and, when available, watch work in the boatbuilding shop. Exhibitions also introduce the textiles associated with life at sea. Woollen boat blankets kept travellers and fishermen warm in open boats, connecting coastal transport with the often less visible work of textile makers.
Planning a visit124
The visitor address is Myrssjøen 44 in Stadsbygd. Check the museum's current openings, exhibitions and arrangements for seeing the workshop. Production schedules and demonstrations vary, so a particular building stage cannot be guaranteed. The museum also offers a café and shop; confirm these separately if they are part of your plan. Online boat models can help prepare for a visit.
