Places with a story
Saemien Sijte

Saemien Sijte is a South Sámi museum and cultural centre at Horjemstangen in Snåsa. Its exhibitions, collections and meeting spaces present a living culture, while the low timber building draws on South Sámi craft and its relationship with the landscape.
The place1
The institution began as a cultural association in 1964, with the ambition of creating a cultural house, collecting objects and buildings, and providing a place for activities. The first building was completed in 1979 and officially inaugurated in 1980. The museum's history therefore begins with community initiative, long before the present architectural landmark.
History and local connections12
The new museum officially opened on 17 June 2022. Fur arkitekter developed its design with the museum's input. Repeated timber elements and the building's close relationship to the terrain connect contemporary architecture with ideas drawn from South Sámi building and textile traditions rather than treating the museum as an isolated sculptural object.
What to look for12
The main exhibition follows traces of South Sámi life and history. Its wider collections and cultural work place objects within language, knowledge and continuing practice. Pay attention to the architecture as well as the exhibitions: changes in light, material and the surrounding woodland form part of the visitor's experience.
Planning a visit34
The visitor address is Snåsavegen 340. The museum provides current openings and booking information. The building is on one level with a step-free entrance, but the gravel path from parking can be difficult for some wheelchairs. Contact reception about assistance or access needs before travelling. Check the current programme for temporary exhibitions and cultural activities.
