Places with a story
Selbu bygdemuseum

Selbu bygdemuseum occupies the old vicarage beside Selbu church. Knitting, millstone production, painted civic interiors and everyday tools make it a place to see how the community's internationally recognisable crafts grew from local working lives.
The place1
The museum's rooms cover textiles, shoemaking, tailoring, music, emigration and minerals. Its setting also matters: the former priest's office preserves the atmosphere of the building's earlier function. In the old council chamber, Bjarne Rise's murals from 1928 depict village work and daily life, using people from Selbu as models.
History and local connections1
Millstone quarrying was an important local industry from around 1600 until 1916. The display brings together products and tools used to extract and shape the stone. The knitting exhibition follows another strand of production, from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, with photographs that connect garments to the people who made them.
What to look for1
More than 350 knitted objects are displayed alongside equipment for turning wool into yarn. The museum also preserves six silver funeral wreaths, an unusual reminder of older commemorative customs. In the yard, Bonstuggu once gave churchgoers shelter and served family ceremonies; today it houses an exhibition on Selbu's skiing history.
Planning a visit1
The visitor address is Gjelbakken 16. Check the municipal museum page for current openings and guided visits, including arrangements outside ordinary hours. Parts of the collections, including knitting, are upstairs and the old building has no lift. Visitors with limited mobility should discuss the rooms they wish to see before travelling. Indoor exhibitions and yard buildings may have different access arrangements.
