Places with a story
Horg bygdetun

Horg bygdetun combines an old farmyard with a landscape of archaeological sites, rock carvings and historic paths. At Fossbakken in Melhus, it tells the story of the former Horg community through buildings, collections and the ground around them.
The place1
The municipality acquired the farm in 1984. It stands east of Gaulfossen, with the museum yard providing a starting point for the area's nature and heritage trails. Volunteers have moved additional local buildings here and developed permanent displays. The site's character comes from this combination of a historic farm and community collecting.
History and local connections1
Fossbakken was settled as a smallholder's place in the late seventeenth century. When the larger Oppistu Foss farm was divided in the late eighteenth century, one farmer moved some of its buildings to the present yard. These form the older core of the museum and connect its layout to changes in local landholding.
What to look for1
Explore the farm buildings before following the surrounding paths. The heritage landscape includes burial grounds, geology, old routes and several rock-carving sites at Foss. It is useful to distinguish these outdoor remains from the museum's interior collections: together they cover a much longer timespan than the farm alone. Follow signs and avoid touching or tracing carved rock surfaces.
Planning a visit1
The municipal museum page provides the current trail map, contact information and visiting arrangements. Outdoor areas can be visited throughout the year, while displays and the Vognbua café follow separate openings. Check the latest route guidance because signage has been undergoing renewal. Ask about access to individual buildings rather than assuming every door will be open.
