Places with a story
Ålen bygdemuseum

Ålen bygdemuseum occupies the old Egga farm on a slope south of the Gaula river. Historic farm buildings and relocated local structures form a museum yard devoted to everyday life in Ålen, within Holtålen municipality.
The place1
The farm lies in the middle of the village, on a steep north-facing hillside at about 450 metres above sea level. The municipality lists twelve buildings and approximately 2,500 objects, alongside books and photographs. The collection makes the farm a place for studying local work, homes and community memory rather than a single display room.
History and local connections1
Egga also has a place in the saga account of the young royal child Håkon Håkonssønn. In the winter of 1206, his protectors arrived at Eggi in Åll and borrowed horses for the journey towards Nidaros. This is a historical narrative associated with the farm, not proof that every surviving museum building existed at that time.
What to look for12
The relocated buildings include Langlandsstuggu and the old school from Engan. Their presence broadens the story from farming to education and domestic life. Notice the buildings' different sizes and construction, and how they fit into the sloping farmyard. The municipality's historical information dates the farm's main building to the early eighteenth century.
Planning a visit1
Consult the municipality's museum page and Ålen Historielag for current visits and contact details. Ask specifically about Ålen bygdemuseum: Holtålen also has a separate museum at Haltdalen, with its own programme. The hillside setting is relevant when planning movement between buildings; confirm interior access and any mobility requirements in advance.
