Ådland kyrkje
Ådland kyrkje is Samnanger's white wooden church beside an old meeting point between fjord travel and overland routes. Its unusual combination of a raised central nave and angled side aisles makes the building worth studying beyond its familiar nineteenth-century appearance.
The place1
Built in 1851 to designs by Andreas Grønning, the church has a three-aisled nave, a square chancel and a western tower. The angled ends of the side aisles give it an almost octagonal outline, while the higher central section recalls a basilica. Pointed windows add an early Gothic Revival character to this distinctive timber construction.
History and local connections12
The church belongs to a much older religious place at Ådland. A medieval predecessor was followed by a timber church in 1652, before the present building replaced it. The tower was altered in 1907, and Ole Landmark planned interior changes for the centenary in 1951. The surviving building therefore records several periods rather than one unchanged construction date.
What to look for1
If the interior is accessible, look for older furnishings that connect the present church with its predecessors. Norges Kirker documents six painted windowpanes dated 1614. A medieval painted altar frontal from the earlier church is now in the University Museum in Bergen, so it should be understood as part of the place's history rather than an object currently displayed here.

Check Samnanger sokn's calendar and contact the parish to establish interior access. The parish still advertises worship and musical events at the church; a historic building is also an active religious place. Treat services and the cemetery respectfully, and confirm a visiting arrangement instead of assuming regular museum opening hours.
