Places with a story
Tollboden i Langesund

Tollboden i Langesund is part of the waterfront customs environment maintained by the local coastal heritage association. Its maritime collection and continuing meeting use connect Bamble's seafaring past to present-day volunteer preservation.
About the place123
The customs house belongs to a group of distinct buildings by the sound: Tollboden, the older warehouse Tollpakkboden and the small watch house St. Helena. Together they explain customs administration, stored goods and surveillance of maritime traffic. Their close proximity makes the working environment easier to understand than one isolated building would.
History and local connections12
The Langesund customs office was established in 1587 and used this waterfront site from the nineteenth century. Today's customs house acquired an upper floor in 1920 for the chief customs officer's accommodation. Sources differ on its earlier construction year, so the building's secure later alteration is more useful than assigning it an unsupported exact founding date.
What to look for13
The ground floor houses Gudleif Gjestland's maritime collection, while the upper floor is used by Langesundsfjorden Kystlag for meetings. The nearby watch house interprets customs work, and workshops in the wider heritage environment keep practical maritime skills alive. A guided or event visit can connect the collection with the boats, work and volunteers behind it.
Plan your visit4
Contact Langesundsfjorden Kystlag through its current website for collection access and announced activities. Its meeting and work sessions are not automatically tourist opening hours. Confirm which buildings are included in a visit, since the customs house, warehouse, watch house and nearby Cudrio museum are separate spaces with different purposes.
