Herregården is the timber residence of Larvik's counts, now a museum where aristocratic interiors meet the city's later civic history. The house reveals how one building could move from elite household to town hall, school, theatre and heritage site.

About the place12

The residence was built for Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, Norway's governor and Larvik's first count. Although made of timber, its scale and decorated rooms expressed the power of the county estate. Its position originally outside the town boundary was connected to privileges over local labour and resources; today it lies within the town near Torstrand.

History and local connections12

The house was completed and furnished in 1677. Extensions for the royal visit in 1733 gave it much of its present form. After the county estate was dissolved, the municipality acquired Herregården in 1821. Civic uses altered the rooms, but investigations later found important older surfaces behind newer finishes. Restoration under Domenico Erdmann took place in 1919–1929.

What to look for12

A guided route through the count's apartments reveals painted interiors, furnishings and the contrast between early rooms and the substantial eighteenth-century phase. Bedroom reconstructions help suggest domestic life without making every object an original possession. The later school and theatre story adds another perspective: this was also a building used by the wider community.

Plan your visit13

Use Larvik museum's current visitor page for seasonal opening and guided arrangements. The permanent exhibition description identifies summer tours, while the museum homepage supplies later seasonal changes. Old archived museum pages are useful for history but their calendars should not determine a trip. Ask staff about access needs before booking a tour of the historic interior.
