Places with a story
Kongsvinger festning

Kongsvinger festning rises above the bend in Glomma, making the relationship between town, river and border landscape easy to understand. Its bastions and historic buildings now form an open cultural site with a long military past.
About the place1
The fortress occupied a strategic position beside routes along Glomma and through Vinger. Its star-shaped bastion design placed defence within the landscape rather than relying on a single tower. Walking the site gives a clear sense of how visibility and control of movement shaped the choice of this hill.
History and local connections12
The main fortress was established in the 1680s and developed further during the eighteenth century. Forsvarsbygg records military activity continuing until 2005. It was never conquered in battle. The commandant's residence, built in 1683, survives as an unusual timber-framed building among the predominantly masonry structures within the walls.
What to look for12
Look across the city and river from the fortress and compare the buildings inside its perimeter. The protected commandant's residence has been adapted for a restaurant with careful changes to preserve vulnerable interiors. Contemporary cultural events and hospitality therefore add another layer to the site's military architecture.
Plan your visit1
Forsvarsbygg keeps the outdoor fortress open throughout the year with free entry. Museums, concerts and other events have their own tickets and arrangements. Follow the site's rules: fires and disposable barbecues are prohibited year-round, dogs must remain on a lead, and drones are not permitted over the fortress. Confirm indoor visits with the relevant operator.
