Places with a story
Nitedals Krudtværk

Nitedals Krudtværk in Nittedal is an industrial landscape of surviving buildings, ruins and water-powered production traces. The protected valley recalls a factory whose products connected local work with shooting, whaling and construction far beyond the municipality.
About the place1
The works occupied the narrow valley along Ørfiskebekken on the edge of Lillomarka. Only a small part of the original building stock survives, so the site must be read through its landscape and remaining structures. Its scattered layout reflects an industry in which production, storage and transport required specialised arrangements.
History and local connections1
Georg Frølich established the powder works in 1883. Powder production continued until 1978, while shotgun cartridge production lasted until 1997. The factory's history included experimentation, technical development and international sales, making it more than a local manufacturing story despite its secluded woodland setting.
What to look for12
Interpretation by the local friends' association helps connect visible remains with the operations they once supported. Volunteers have repaired and documented the site and published its history. Look for the relationship between the stream, former working areas and surviving buildings rather than expecting a complete original factory complex.
Plan your visit2
The historical account describes a preserved industrial area and a community effort to develop museum interpretation. Confirm current walks, open days or building access with the local heritage association before travelling. Follow marked routes and barriers, and do not enter industrial ruins simply because a doorway or structure is visible.
