Lofotkatedralen is the familiar name for Vågan kirke near Kabelvåg, a large timber church built to accommodate the people gathered by the seasonal Lofoten fishery. Its architecture and inherited furnishings connect the 1898 building with a much older church community.

The place1

Architect Carl Julius Bergstrøm designed the cross-shaped Gothic Revival church. Timber components were prefabricated by Jacob Digre’s firm in Trondheim and assembled in Kabelvåg. The church was consecrated in October 1898 and has approximately twelve hundred seats, explaining the scale of its prominent yellow and brown exterior.

History and local connections1

The previous church had become too small for the congregation, including visiting fishermen. The nickname began in 1929. During an ordination service, Bishop Eivind Berggrav described the crowded building as a cathedral. The name reflects its impression and capacity, while its formal name remains Vågan kirke.

What to look for1

Furnishings bring earlier periods into the large interior. A Bible printed in Copenhagen in 1589 is displayed, and chandeliers and altar candlesticks survive from seventeenth-century churches. Borgar Hauglid’s stained-glass image of Christ was given for the church’s eightieth anniversary in 1978. The triptych altarpiece by Fritz Jensen dates from 1861 and originally belonged to the predecessor church.

Planning a visit1

Consult the parish for the current visitor season and interior access. Published notices for earlier summers should not be reused as today’s opening hours or prices. Church ceremonies can take precedence over sightseeing. The interior’s art and inherited objects merit time beyond a quick look at the exterior or a photograph of the tower.
