Places with a story
Aarflotmuseet

Aarflotmuseet tells the story of Sivert Aarflot at Ekset, where he lived and ran a printing business. In Volda, the museum connects a local farmer's extraordinary appetite for learning with libraries, newspapers and the spread of knowledge beyond a small educated elite.
The place1
Viti presents Aarflot as a major popular educator in northwestern Norway despite having only twenty-two days of formal schooling. His interests ranged from practical cultivation to astronomy. The museum's location at Ekset is important: it places this broad intellectual ambition in the community where he worked, rather than treating it as an abstract biography.
History and local connections1
Aarflot became a teacher and a district sheriff, and established a library, printing press and the newspaper Norsk Landboeblad. The operator identifies the present newspaper Møre as the continuation of that publishing tradition. His activities therefore linked reading, public administration and practical improvement within the same local environment.
What to look for1
The museum explains how knowledge was collected and shared, making printing and popular education the central themes of a visit. Consider the connection between farming questions and wider scientific curiosity: the distinction between practical work and learning was less rigid in Aarflot's project than it might first appear. The old building adds a tangible setting to that story.
Planning a visit1
The museum is at Sivert Aarflot-vegen 10 and opens by arrangement. Check Viti's own page and contact the operator before travelling specifically to enter. Viti states that the older building does not have universal access, so visitors with mobility requirements should ask for details when arranging their visit.
