Places with a story
Romsdalsmuseet

Romsdalsmuseet brings the building traditions of Romsdal together in Molde. Its open-air village collection allows visitors to compare homes, stores and farm buildings in a green park, with the region's changing everyday life expressed through timber, roofs and working spaces.
The place1
The collection contains around fifty historical buildings from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Different house types show how heat, smoke and domestic life were organized before modern conveniences. Storehouses, barns and animal buildings widen the story beyond the dwelling itself and explain why a farm needed many specialized structures.
History and local connections1
The museum was established in 1912, and its park opened in 1928. Bringing regional buildings into a museum grounds preserved examples of ways of building that could otherwise disappear. The place is therefore both a collection of old houses and evidence of the twentieth-century effort to document and share Romsdal's cultural history.
What to look for1
Look for contrasts between houses with central open fireplaces and those using enclosed smoke ovens. The mountain-farm group above the duck pond adds the story of seasonal farming to the village collection. During the visitor season, guided house visits, crafts and flatbread baking can make the practical uses of these spaces easier to understand.
Planning a visit1
Consult Romsdalsmuseet's page for the village collection before planning an indoor visit, since the park and individual historical interiors have different arrangements. Activities vary with the museum programme. The modern Krona building is another part of the museum grounds; leave time to connect its exhibitions with the buildings outdoors.
