Sør-Varanger lies between Varangerfjorden and the borders with Finland and Russia. Kirkenes, Hesseng and Bjørnevatn form its built-up axis between the port and the mining area, with services, industry and border functions.
Beyond this axis, the landscape shifts between the fishing village of Bugøynes, riverside Neiden and Pasvik's farms and forests. Skolt Sámi, North Sámi, Kven/Finnish and Norwegian histories connect to different places and livelihoods.
