The flat Ørland peninsula has extensive grain fields, shallow bays and an airbase that visibly shapes the landscape and working life. Towards Jøssund and Lysøysund, the municipality becomes hillier and more divided by sounds and islands.
Brekstad and Bjugn play different central roles: Brekstad has ferry and express-boat links across the fjord, while Bjugn houses the municipal administration. Farming, seafood and the armed forces provide several economic centres of gravity.
