Aurland's fjord villages have different roles: Aurlandsvangen is the service centre, Flåm the railway and tourism hub, while Undredal and Gudvangen occupy separate fjord branches. Steep mountains confine settlement to narrow shores and valley floors.
Behind the visible tourism economy lies a major hydropower municipality, with reservoirs and power stations between mountain plateau and fjord. In Undredal, goat farming and cheesemaking sustain a much smaller, distinctive livelihood.
