Gjøvik is an industrial town on Mjøsa's western shore, with Hunnselva linking the centre to Hunndalen. Factories, commerce and a university campus shape the urban environment.
Beyond town lie the farming and forest districts of Vardal and Snertingdal, while Biri has its own industries and links across Mjøsbrua. The municipality has several centres along the lake and inland among the hills.
